Don't think that a local provider is more convenient either. What does it matter where your provider is located? All companies offer a toll-free number that anyone can call. Correspondence happens via mail no matter how close your provider is. All phone companies might as well be located equidistant from your home or office.

You don't have to discount your local provider completely. Include them when you shop around. It can actually be that they are the cheapest option available. It's always worthwhile to check. Just don't choose them by default!
